The stillness, the quiet, the wide open spaces. A place where a person can breathe easy and just soak in the tranquility. The older I get, the more I crave such spots.

Salvatore Thomas DiFrancesca III, a former newspaper columnist and a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard, was raised by a roving band of gypsies who crisscrossed America throughout his entire childhood.
